Health Benefits

Blueberries emerged as the top antioxidant capacity fruit in a labratory testing procedure called Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity - ORAC - developed by the USDA. ORAC is recognized as the definitive measurement of antioxidant capacity. One-half cup of blueberries delivers as much antioxidant power as five servings of other fruits and vegetables such as peas, carrots, apples, squash and broccoli. High levels of anthocyanin, a natural antioxidant, make  Blueberries powerful allies in the fight against aging, heart disease and cancer. Called "Miracle Berries" by Prevention Magazine, "Super Food" by Health Magazine, and "Fruit of the year" by Eating Well Magazine, blueberries are making big news .

The blueberry's powerful health benefit has been attributed to uniquely high levels of polyphenolic compounds called anthocyanins. Anthocyanin is the same substance that gives the fruit its rich blue and red coloring -a powerful flavonoid antioxidant found in some other plants as well. It's in the pigment!

Anthocyanins and other polyphenols are powerful flavonoid antioxidants. Antioxidants are thought to help protect the body against the damaging effects of free radicals and the chronic diseases associated with the aging process. While some fruits have 3-5 types of anthocyanins, blueberries have 25-30!

Blueberries provide large amounts of chlorogenic acid, which is thought to be one of the "cancer fighters" found in fresh fruits and vegetables.

Blueberries contain strong anti-inflammatories such as the arthritis-relieving pigment cyanidin.
